Faculty Continuing Education and Development of Medical Educators

Self-directed learning has long been cited in the academic literature on medical educator development as the most effective means of addressing competency gaps of medical educators. As “Self-Directed Learners”, Winthrop Faculty and Medical Educators are best equipped to choose the appropriate learning resources for their individual needs. Winthrop Academic Affairs has collated the following resources to aid you in your learning journey.

Local Resources for Faculty Continuing Education

  1. On-Demand CME Video Library – Winthrop CME maintains a catalog of CME Grand Rounds recordings, covering content for most specialties. Winthrop affiliates receive free. Contact us for discount codes.
  2. Performance Improvement Science Academy (annual 11 month cohort nominated by clinical Chairs for August start). Contact us.
  3. Winthrop Faculty Scholars (18 month cohort for academic educator and scholarly development, nominated by clinical chairs). Contact us.
  4. CME planning and curricular mentoring (ongoing, must submit CME proposals 9 months ahead of desired course date or Grand Rounds start date for accreditation). Propose a Course or Series.
  5. MOC and CME assessment writing guidance: See materials developed by Winthrop CME.

National Resources for Faculty Continuing Education

  1. AAMC’s MedEdPortal
    A peer-reviewed, open-access journal that promotes educational scholarship and dissemination of teaching and assessment resources in the health professions. Includes many helpful teaching templates and outlines.
  2. Open School – Winthrop maintains a group subscription for GME of various on-demand topics for QI, PI, and medical educators. Contact us for access codes.
  3. DR-ED email list for Medical educators:
    To sign-up, visit the DR-ED website.See especially: The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University and Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/ Northwell invite you to participate in a free series of sessions about Self-Directed Learning in medical school curricula.

National/International Organizations for Medical Education

These organizations are great resources for continuing education and professional development meetings to attend and present your scholarly work, and ways to network with other academic leaders/program directors.
