Residents in the GPR program will receive specialized training in the following off-service specialty areas:
- Internal Service Rotation (Two Weeks Duration)The resident will be assigned to a medicine teaching team consisting of medicine faculty, residents, and students. The resident will become proficient/competent in:
- Obtaining and interpreting the patient’s chief complaint, medical and social history and review of systems
- Obtaining and interpreting clinical and other diagnostic data from other health care providers
- Documenting the patient’s assessment, evaluation and treatment plan in the EMR
- Completing a routine physical examination
- Selecting, ordering and interpreting laboratory studies and other diagnostic procedures
- Establishing a medical risk assessment using the data from the history and physical examination
- Providing coordinated, patient-focused care among the medical specialties
- Caring effectively for diverse patients with special physiological, cultural and social needs
- Anesthesia Service Rotation (Two Weeks Duration)The resident will be assigned to an anesthesia teaching team consisting of medicine faculty, residents, and students. The resident will become proficient/competent in:
- Preoperative patient evaluation
- Assessment of the effects of behavioral and pharmacologic agents used in anesthesia
- Venipuncture technique and administration of intravenous agents
- Patient monitoring
- Airway management, anesthetic induction and intubation
- Prevention and treatment of anesthetic emergencies
- Assessment of patient recovery from anesthesia
- Emergency Medicine Rotation (Two Weeks Duration)The resident will be assigned to an emergency medicine teaching team consisting of medicine faculty, residents, and students. The resident will become proficient/competent in:
- Recognition and triage of medical emergencies
- Detection of signs and symptoms of the common dental crises
- Perform procedures and medications administered in medical emergencies for patient stabilization
- Treat patients with intra-oral dental emergencies and infections
- Anticipate, diagnose and provide initial treatment and follow-up management for medical emergencies that may occur during dental treatment
- Treat intraoral hard and soft tissue lesions of traumatic origin
- Provide initial assessment and care for mild to moderate facial trauma
