Clinical Services

NYU Winthrop’s Pulmonary Division encompasses three (3) clinical services: Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine. The pulmonary team manages an active inpatient and outpatient consultative service with special interests in asthma, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. Our critical care team (consisting of an Intensivist, Attending and Fellow, Housestaff, critical care Nurses, and a Pharmacist) rounds daily in the Medical and Coronary Care Units. A wide range of interesting medical topics including pulmonary, cardiac, metabolic, and infectious disorders are discussed. The Sleep Disorders Center is primarily an outpatient service and is the only certified training center on Long Island. Although sleep apnea is the most common disorder seen, other interesting sleep problems such as insomnia, cataplexy, and narcolepsy are encountered.

Research activities include a wide variety of clinical trials examining the benefits of new agents for treating patients with sepsis, asthma, pulmonary embolism, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). At the basic science level, the cardiovascular research group, headed by Jeff Kazzaz, PhD., has been recognized for studies to control bacterial colonization in the airways, novel methods to reduce oxidant injury and lung infection using molecular and cellular techniques in combination with tissue culture and experimental models. Current research interests of this group include gene therapy oxidant and antioxidant signaling, and the potential uses of novel bismuth-thiol antimicrobial compounds.
