Patient Responsibilities

As a patient at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, you are responsible for:

  1. Following hospital rules and regulations affecting patient care and regulations affecting patient care and conduct.
  2. Assuring that the financial obligations of your healthcare are fulfilled as promptly as possible.
  3. Being considerate of the rights of other patients and hospital personnel, and for assisting in the control of the noise and the number of visitors. You are responsible for being respectful of the property of other people and of the hospital.
  4. Providing, to the best of your knowledge, accurate and complete information about your present medical complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other matters relating to your health. You have the responsibility to report unexpected changes in your condition to the responsible practitioner. You are responsible for reporting whether you clearly comprehend a contemplated course of action and what is expected of you.
  5. Following the treatment plan recommended by the practitioner primarily responsible for your care. This may include following the instructions of nurses and allied health personnel as they carry out the coordinated plan of care, implementing the responsible practitioner’s orders, and enforcing the applicable hospital rules and regulations.
  6. Your actions if you refuse treatment or do not follow the practitioner’s instructions.

You are responsible for the safekeeping of all your personal articles. We urge you to send home all valuables and clothing you will not need as a patient. Articles such as dentures, hearing aids, contact lenses, etc., should be sent home if you do not need them as a patient. Please ask for a denture cup in which to keep your dentures when not in use. Do not place them on your food tray or underneath your pillow. The hospital is not responsible for the loss of personal articles.
