Donald Brand, PhD

As Director of Health Outcomes Research at NYU Winthrop, Dr. Brand is responsible for leading a health outcomes research program, assisting clinical investigators with the design and conduct of observational studies, and evaluating the hospital’s clinical programs. He contributes to house staff training and mentoring, as well as faculty research development.

Collin Brathwaite, MD, FACS, FASMBS

Collin E.M. Brathwaite, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chief Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery, General, Minimally Invasive, Bariatric Surgery and Director of our Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program. Dr. Brathwaite has received several teaching awards, has authored or co-authored numerous publications on various aspects of surgery, and presently holds two patents.

His current research interests include clinical outcomes from various bariatric surgery procedures and investigations on the impact of gastric bypass on Type 2 diabetes and obesity using a laboratory model.

Melissa Fazzari, PhD, MS

Dr. Melissa Fazzari joined NYU Winthrop in 2013 as the Director of the Biostatistics Department, and focuses on overseeing the activities of the group as well as collaborating with NYU Winthrop investigators. Dr. Fazzari also currently works with researchers at Mount Sinai developing prognostic models using methylation and gene expression data to predict treatment response and other patient outcomes in Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Nazeeh Hanna, MD

Nazeeh Hanna, MD has been a faculty member and Chief of Neonatology at NYU Winthrop Hospital since 2007. His research track is focused in the area of developmental immunology and the potential impact of maternal exposure to environmental toxicants on preterm births. Dr. Hanna research interests were funded by several national agencies including NIH, NICHD, American Lung Association and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Hanna has been an invited speaker and a Chair in National conferences on Neonatology and Reproductive Biology/Immunology.

Mahmood Hussain, PhD

Dr. Mahmood Hussain is the Director of the Diabetes and Obesity Research Center and Director of Basic Science at NYU Winthrop Hospital. Dr. Hussain is an internationally renowned expert and leader in lipid biology and cardiovascular disease.

Alan Jacobson, MD

Dr. Jacobson is Chief Research Officer and Director of NYU Winthrop Hospital’s new Research Institute and Center for Diabetes Research. As CRO, he is charged with integrating research with NYU Winthrop’s clinical and educational missions, centralizing research activities, developing effective strategies to maximize external funding and building research throughout the hospital.

Xiaoyue Pan, PhD

Xiaoyue Pan, PhD is Research Scientist , Basic Science and at the Diabetes and Obesity Research Center at NYU Winthrop Hospital. Her research focuses on the molecular, physiological, and pathological mechanisms of atherosclerosis, obesity and diabetes by circadian clock.

Louis Ragolia, PhD

Dr. Ragolia is Director of Applied Sciences Research at NYU Winthrop where he manages the basic science interests in the Department of Obstetrics /Gynecology as well. Dr. Ragolia sits on several committees at NYU Winthrop including the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Radiation Safety Committee and is the NYU Winthrop representative at the Long Island Life Science Initiative and the Academy for Medical Development and Collaboration’ Core Director and Proteomics group. He has over 40 publications in highly respected peer-reviewed journals as well as several review articles and patents. Dr. Ragolia holds the academic title of Associate Professor from Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

Allison Reiss, MD

Allison Reiss, MD, is Head of the Inflammation Laboratory at NYU Winthrop Hospital. She is Principal Investigator of the Cardiovascular Inflammation Reduction Trial (CIRT), supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a part of the NIH. The trial will investigate whether taking low-dose methotrexate, a widely used anti-inflammatory therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, reduces cardiovascular events in individuals with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome that have had a heart attack or multiple coronary blockages.

Steve Carsons, MD

Steve Carsons, MD is Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at NYU Winthrop Hospital. Dr. Carsons’ research has focused on modulation of inflammation in rheumatic disease including the effect of biochemical modulation of extracellular matrix proteins on inflammatory cell function and the role of circulating matrix proteins on inflammatory cell function and the role of circulating matrix proteins as biomarkers in rheumatic disease.

John Aloia, MD

John Aloia, MD is Chief Academic Officer of NYU Winthrop Hospital and Director of NYU Winthrop’s Bone Mineral Research Center, which has had multiple NIH and other investigator-initiated grants and participated in almost every pharmaceutical trial for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis in the past 30 years. He has published over 160 articles and book chapters. He is nationally recognized as an expert on osteoporosis and related disorders.
