Kidney disease is a serious threat to public health. An estimated 30 million Americans — 13 percent of the population — have chronic kidney disease, which often leads to kidney failure that is diagnosed in more than 100,000 US residents annually. With the population aging, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing dramatically and diabetes is the single biggest cause of this problem. While advanced treatments and improved dialysis technology have extended survival over the past 20 years, more people are living with this debilitating and costly disease than ever. Their best hope is research.
