Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Surgery

Cerebrovascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery at NYU Winthrop Hospital

Cerebrovascular diseases affect blood vessels that provide circulation to the brain, such as arteries, veins, and capillaries. Cerebrovascular disorders include strokes, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), stenosis, and cavernous malformations. Many cerebrovascular disorders can be successfully treated with surgery, minimizing the risk of stroke and bleeding.

What is Cerebrovascular Surgery

Cerebrovascular surgery is a distinct specialty practiced by neurosurgeons who are specially trained to provide medical and surgical vascular treatment of the brain. These treatments include newer, less invasive endovascular techniques used for peripheral and cerebrovascular conditions such as brain aneurysms.

What is Endovascular Surgery?

An alternative to traditional open surgery, endovascular surgery is a state-of-the-art, less invasive procedure used to treat disorders of the blood vessels providing circulation to the brain, such as an aneurysm. Through endovascular surgery, a small incision is made near each hip to access the blood vessels. An endovascular graft is inserted through the arteries in a catheter. The graft expands and seals off the aneurysm, preventing blood from flowing into the aneurysm.
