Genetic Counseling Services

The Human Genetics Center (HGC) at NYU Winthrop Hospital on Long Island, NY, offers comprehensive genetic counseling services that provide physicians and their patients with essential information about advanced maternal age and pregnancy, inherited illnesses, chromosomal disorders, congenital anomalies, recurrent miscarriages and inherited disorders associated with hormonal abnormalities.

Genetic counseling is the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial aspects of genetic contributions to disease, thereby achieving a better understanding of your genetic background. We provide invaluable information for pregnant women and those who are planning to become pregnant.

Genetic Counseling Services on Long Island

The Human Genetics Center provides a broad spectrum of services including:

Genetic Counselor – One-on-one genetic counseling with one of our certified genetic counselors. During the sessions, the counselor provides information to help individuals and families understand risks for certain types of hereditary conditions, chromosomal disorders, congenital anomalies, and inherited disorders associated with hormonal abnormalities. Issues covered by genetic counselors include:

  • Age-related risks for chromosome abnormalities (for women 35 or older at time of delivery)
  • Abnormal screening tests or ultrasound findings
  • Family history of a known or suspected genetic condition
  • History of multiple miscarriages
  • Exposure to a medication or chemical agent during pregnancy
  • Carrier screening based on ancestry, such as Eastern European Jewish descent
  • Diagnostic prenatal testing—Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) or Amniocentesis
  • Screening for Down syndrome, Trisomy 18/13 and Spina Bifida through maternal serum screening and/or genetic ultrasound.

Family and Medical Histories – Complete family and medical histories are taken and specific risks are calculated.

Pre-Symptomatic Genetic Testing – These tests detect gene mutations associated with disorders that appear after birth, often later in life.

Prenatal Diagnostic Genetic Services – We use diagnostic testing to identify or rule out a specific genetic or chromosomal condition. You may be referred to us for prenatal testing if you are older, have a family or medical history that could affect your pregnancy, or after seeing the results of other, routine tests. Most test results are reassuring but if a problem with your pregnancy is detected, our genetic counselor will explain the problem and what can be done about it.

Cytogenetics Laboratory Services – Our lab provides all types of chromosome studies, including congenital disorders, prenatal diagnosis, and hematologic/oncologic disorders.

Genetic/Metabolic Endocrine Program

Physician Reports – These are generated to aid in development of treatment plans for patients with positive results

Professional and Community Education – NYU Winthrop Hospital provides lectures to medical professionals and the general community to communicate up-to-date information on the role of genetics in family planning and health.

Genetic Testing Results Lead to Informed Decisions

Genetic information is a very empowering tool for our high-risk patients. All the screenings and tests performed through our genetic counseling services provide important information that reassures and aids our patients and their families with decision making and pregnancy planning. In some cases, our findings may show the presence of a genetic condition in the fetus than can be corrected with treatments or Fetal Surgery.
