Child Care Education & Maternal Education Programs
The Division of Maternal/Child Care in the Department of Nursing at NYU Winthrop Hospital promotes Patient and Family Centered Care with a wide selection of child care education and maternal education programs for expectant and new mothers, fathers and young siblings designed to help the entire family adjust to a whole new life when the baby arrives.
“Welcome to NYU Winthrop” Orientation Program
This free program features a 90-minute presentation led by a registered nurse and pediatrician followed by a question and answer period. Attendees will learn about the New Life Center, admitting process, labor and delivery, visiting hours and discharges. This program does not include a physical tour and is offered one evening a month from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
Inpatient Educational Programs
Baby Care Education
Individualized instruction provided by the nursing staff on the patient care unit
Individualized instruction provided by the nursing staff and Certified Lactation Consultant.
Individualized instruction offered by a Certified Childbirth Educator to high-risk antepartum inpatients who cannot attend classes.
Baby Care & Preterm Infant Education
Baby care instruction provided in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Newborn medicine experts discuss the specialized needs of the preterm baby and general baby care.
Individualized CPR Education
Instruction and demonstrations for families with high-risk infants in the NICU and children being discharged from the Pediatric Unit.
Newborn TV Channel
Free of charge on the antepartum, postpartum, and NICU units as well as in the New Life Center, the channel provides 24-hour programming in English and Spanish on topics of interest to new parents, including breastfeeding, bottle feeding, parenting, postpartum, child safety and sibling rivalry.

Outpatient Classes & Educational Services
Preparing for Childbirth
Focusing on natural childbirth using the Lamaze method, this class provides the mother-to-be and her coach with the opportunity to learn about the birthing experience. Discussions are also held on pain-relief options and cesarean delivery. The class is offered on three weekday evenings or as an all-day weekend class.
This two-hour review course is for women who delivered less than two and a half years ago.
A Certified Lactation Consultant discusses the advantages of breast milk, and provides participants with practical information and strategies for successful breastfeeding. Topics include positioning, latch, pumping, maternal nutrition, and how to tell if your infant received enough to eat. This two and a half hour-class is offered on a weekday evening or weekend day.
Breastfeeding Support Group
A Certified Lactation Consultant facilitates this free, two-hour weekly support group where moms and their babies gather to share their experiences and receive guidance for any concerns.
Infant Care Class
Instruction is offered on infant bathing, dressing, feeding and safety. Class discussions help build confidence and ease the transition into parenthood. Grandparents and caregivers are also invited to register for this two and a half hour-class offered on a weekday evening or weekend day.
Learn infant CPR and choking relief at this one-hour class using your own American Heart Association Infant CPR Anytime® kit which includes: Mini Baby® CPR personal manikin; bilingual Infant CPR Anytime DVD; bilingual Infant CPR Anytime Skills Reminder Card; Mini Baby replacement lung and manikin wipes.
Big Brother/Big Sister Day Camp
Big brothers and sisters can see where their new sibling will be born, make a gift for the baby, and have a snack of juice and cookies. This one-hour program for 3 to 7-year-olds is offered on a weekday afternoon.
A certified prenatal yoga instructor guides the expectant mom in a safe and supportive manner through relaxing movements and breathing techniques designed to support her pregnancy. This eight-week series features gentle yoga poses to help increase flexibility, strength, circulation, balance and develop the mind-body-spirit connection. The program is offered on weekday evenings and is recommended during the second and third trimester.
