World-class treatment for scoliosis conveniently located close to home.
Scoliosis is a progressive condition that causes the spine to curve or twist. This can result in uneven shoulders, a prominence of the shoulder blade and other issues. The condition affects up to three percent of school-age children, and most often appears in adolescent girls. Scoliosis tends to run in families and has many different types including idiopathic, early onset, congenital and neuromuscular. Scoliosis treatment varies depending on the severity of the curve. This can range from observation and bracing to surgery to straighten the spine.
At NYU Winthrop, our Orthopedic Department staff and physicians use the most advanced, non-operative and surgical techniques to reposition the spine. Treatment is focused on relieving pain and reducing the risk for curvature progression.
Conservative scoliosis treatment options are typically recommended first. These include:
When non-invasive treatments are not sufficient for pain relief or slowing the progression of the curvature, surgery is the recommended treatment. Often, minimally-invasive surgery is used to minimize risk and decrease the length of time for recovery.
