Lung Cancer Center, Treatment and Doctors

NYU Winthrop Hospital’s renowned Lung Cancer Center on Long Island provides a comprehensive program of prevention, diagnosis and advanced multidisciplinary treatment for men and women with lung cancer and people with a high risk of developing the disease.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in men and women; therefore, it is our mission to fight it with our full arsenal of expertise, technologies, experience and multi-faceted treatment approaches.

How the Lung Cancer Center Works

From the very first visit, the efforts of NYU Winthrop’s many lung cancer specialists are coordinated and tailored to meet the unique needs of every patient and family. This collaborative approach results in the availability of a full spectrum of standard and innovative treatment programs.

Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Team

Our highly skilled team of physicians, nurses and social workers work together to give patients the best experience and outcomes possible:

  • Cancer Care Coordinator – The Lung Cancer Center’s full-time registered nurse is a compassionate liaison helping patients and families move as easily as possible through the diagnosis and treatment process while ensuring communications are clear and open between the medical team, patient and family.
  • Medical Oncologists – Specialists in the medical management of lung cancer, NYU Winthrop’s lung cancer doctors were among the first to offer cutting-edge “targeted” therapies now considered standard practice. They continue to work at the leading edge of lung cancer treatment by conducting extensive research and providing patients with ground-breaking therapies and opportunities to participate in clinical trials.
  • Radiation Oncologists – These cancer specialists have expertise in the most advanced radiation therapy technologies, including linear accelerators, CT Simulator radiotherapy planning and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. In 2005, NYU Winthrop was the first hospital in the NYC metro area to offer a CyberKnife® program.
  • Thoracic Surgeons – Our experienced surgeons perform a wide range of complex surgical procedures (open and minimally invasive) of the thoracic cavity, including the lungs, esophagus, chest wall and mediastinum.
  • Interventional Radiologists –Interventional radiologists use small needles, guidewires and catheters to diagnose and treat disease. One example is radiofrequency ablation which destroys lung tumors with a heat-generating needle probe (electrode).
  • Pulmonologists – Physicians with specialty training in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases including lung cancer, pulmonologists perform many procedures that facilitate diagnosis and initial management of lung cancer such as diagnostic bronchoscopies and lung function evaluations and rehabilitation.
  • Pathologists – Pathologists diagnose medical problems by studying cell and tissue samples under a microscope such as analyzing tissue from lung biopsies.</li.
  • Radiologists – These physicians diagnose medical problems by conducting and interpreting imaging studies produced with X-rays, CAT or CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans and ultrasound. They play an important role in determining lung cancer diagnoses.
  • Social Workers – They assist patients and families with supportive counseling and cancer support groups. They also provide valuable information about community and financial resources.
