Hidden Scar® Breast Surgery

Women with breast cancer

In 2019, NYU Winthrop Hospital became the first Hidden Scar® Center of Excellence in Long Island, NY, offering an advanced approach to breast cancer surgery. This breakthrough for women diagnosed with breast cancer removes cancerous tissue but hides visible scarring.

Hidden Scar Advantages

Approximately 253,000 women annually are diagnosed with breast cancer requiring surgery and more than 65 percent of them are unhappy with the remaining scar. Now NYU Winthrop surgeons can help eradicate breast cancer and offer a better cosmetic outcome. Hidden Scar is a nipple-sparing technique and can be used whether a patient is having a breast-conserving lumpectomy or a mastectomy.

What is the Hidden Scar Method?

Surgeons remove cancerous tissue from a single, small incision in a hidden area, preserving the natural shape of the breast and reducing visible scars. This less-invasive incision can be made in the natural crease under the breast, hidden in a natural fold of the armpit or along the edges of the areola. The Hidden Scar technique is powered by Intelligent Photonics® technology which provides the required illumination of the breast cavity during surgery.

Hidden Scar Results

Patients who choose the Hidden Scar approach enjoy optimal clinical outcomes and have no greater risk of cancer recurrence than patients who choose other surgical techniques. NYU Winthrop’s Breast Health Team has always gone above and beyond the standards of care and is now proud to offer this safe, advanced method of treating women with breast cancer on Long Island.
