Stop the Bleed Injury Prevention

President image

According to a National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 46. This includes life-threatening injuries from car crashes, gun violence, mass casualty incidents, terrorism, and home and workplace injuries. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes so it is critical to quickly stop the hemorrhaging.

In 2013, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation brought together representatives from medicine, law enforcement and the military to determine how to increase survival rates for gunshot and mass-casualty incident victims. The committee recommended training and education for the public, so that unharmed victims or witnesses can act immediately to help save lives.

As Nassau County’s only ACS certified adult Level 1 Trauma Center with full adult and pediatric capabilities, NYU Winthrop is dedicated to providing comprehensive care. The Hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach team is committed to educating our community, and Stop the Bleed is one of many programs designed to keep our neighbors safe.

  • Hands-on training includes life-saving interventions using a tourniquet, gauze pack or clean cloth with mock body parts and a red liquid.
  • ‘Training the Trainers’ sessions are available for certified medical personnel who can help bring this important information to their local communities.
